Family Storytime Company

The Family Storytime Company is for any Scottish based theatre maker who;

  • is aged between 18 and 25 and at the very early stages of developing a career in the arts?
  • is keen to learn about all aspects of theatre-making and touring whilst devising and performing?
  • loves breaking the fourth wall and interacting with audiences?
  • Is passionate about theatre for early years?

The company of 4 members devise and perform interactive shows for children aged 3 – 7 throughout the year.  Participants are mentored throughout the process by our Associate Director for Pathways – SYT’s programme dedicated to aiding the progression of young people through the medium of theatre.

On selected days throughout the year, the company brainstorm, play, create, rehearse and ultimately perform a show to an audience of children and their parent’s and carers.

Last year’s inaugural company set a high standard with fantastic performances of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, The Enormous Turnip, The Little Red Hen and many more - all presented in partnership with Edinburgh International Science Festival, a partnership we will renew for 2018.

Current company member Jen Athan states of her experience so far
“Being a part of the Family Storytime Company has really enriched my creative life. As a performer and composer. It has given me a great opportunity to work with like-minded individuals and has presented me with opportunities I wouldn't find anywhere else. I am so happy I applied to be a part of Family Storytime and I know the amazing experiences I've had with the company will stay with me forever”.

In addition to being an excellent training opportunity, there is also a training bursary totalling £1,050 for the 10 month commitment, plus travel expenses from SYT’s base in Glasgow to any venues we may potentially travel to.

Applications from artists who have wider creative backgrounds are positively encouraged e.g. music, dance, physical theatre, design. Potential company members should have a keen interest in developing work for younger audiences through a collaborative process and a commitment to developing their skills in all aspects of theatre.

We will open registrations for the 2019 company in summer 2018 via this website and our social media.
