THE WORK
We design and produce projects that offer artistic development opportunities for aspiring, emerging and early career artists aged 14 to 25. We work with young people who are based in Scotland, across intersections and geographies.
With Scottish Youth Theatre young artists can develop and refine their practice through:
- learning new skills
- making and touring new work
- learning about the professional industry
- connecting with like-minded individuals and professional artists

At Scottish Youth Theatre, we are interested in providing in-depth opportunities that respond to young artists’ needs and interests. We bring young people together from across Scotland or base projects in different locations across the country. We support young people to make original performance work in ensembles, small collectives and as solo artists.
Sitting between youth theatre/education and the professional industry, we have a role to play in improving the diversity of people in our sector. In recognition that recruitment can be used as a tool of inclusion and exclusion, our recruitment of participants addresses under-representation through targeted recruitment and/or positive action.
HOW WE WORK
We cultivate an environment where participants are at the helm of their own creative journey and the work they make is their opportunity to interrogate, question and reflect on things that matter to them. We strive to broaden their artistic experience, introducing them to a range of art forms and practitioners to inform and inspire new directions in their work.
We craft and curate their art for relevant audiences, utilising different physical and digital platforms.

We employ freelance artists and creative practitioners to work on projects to inspire, mentor, teach and collaborate with participants. We seek out like-minded organisations across Scotland to work in partnership for the benefit of young people.
We positively encourage young people to be involved in local youth theatre provision where it is available and to look to Scottish Youth Theatre as an integral part of their career development as young artists.
TAKE PART
We work with young people based in Scotland in the 14-25 age bracket. The programme is delivered on a project-by-project basis offering a range of ways for young artists to participate. We do not offer weekly classes.
There are different ways to get involved, depending on the project:
- Some projects require young people to apply for a place and may ask you to respond to questions and tell us your ideas. Projects like the National Ensemble will require an audition delivered as a workshop.
- There are also projects and workshops that are offered on a first-come-first-served basis so you can book a place and you’re in!
- We also work with established youth theatres around Scotland and welcome Youth Theatre Leaders getting in touch to explore possibilities.
As part of most projects, we aim to offer paid traineeships to early-career young artists to support them in their transition into the professional industry.
Previous traineeships have focused on different aspects of making theatre including writing, producing, workshop facilitation, making solo work and producing podcasts.
Opportunities are advertised on our socials and this website and there is an application process. Trainees also benefit from our usual wellbeing and access support.
Sometimes opportunities arise where we are able to pay young artists to make a new piece of work. This may be for a specific project, event or may require a response to a brief from a partnership organisation.
