News: Public Statement by SYT

In January this year, Scottish Youth Theatre learned that we had not been successful in our application for regular funding from Creative Scotland for the period 2018-21. This represents a gap of around a third of our required income.

After the news from Creative Scotland we have worked on many business models, a variety of cost cutting exercises and discussed how we can better collaborate to share costs and resources with like-minded organisations. However sadly, without a realistic expectation that we would be successful in securing financial support in such a limited time to meet the significant funding gap, we are left with no other realistic option but to cease trading on 31st July 2018.

We remain committed to delivering our activities up to the end of the summer period with as much energy and dedication as we always have, in a celebration of the children and young people we are so committed to serving.

This includes:

  • our National Ensemble 2018 where we have secured significant sponsorship and match funding to enable their summer production to tour 4 cities in Scotland
  • our Family Storytime Company 2018 who sold out their first show and will conclude their year in the summer months
  • our Summer Courses for 8-11s and 12-15s
  • our Summer Devising Course for 14-18s
  • our third term of the academic year for our Saturday Weekly Workshop participants and Workshop Trainees, with end of year performances in June
  • our April Toolbox sessions for 8-11s
  • our part in a unique collaboration with the other National Youth Performing Arts Companies, creating an original cross artform piece for the European Championships Festival 2018

If you are a current participant then the best way you can support us is by continuing to attend for the remainder of our time.

We appreciate this will be devastating news for so many and thank everyone for their unswerving support in recent months.
