News: Scottish Youth Theatre Statement on Coronavirus - COVID-19

UPDATE – 17/03/20

Due to the new circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the government guidelines, we have updated the status of a number of Scottish Youth Theatre activities. As of Thursday 19th March, the Scottish Youth Theatre building will be closed to the public and will close to tenants and the majority of staff on Friday 20th March. Staff will move to work from home where possible. We anticipate the closure to last some weeks, depending on circumstances, the earliest anticipated opening is Mon 20th April but it is likely the closure will continue beyond this date. The updated status of activity is listed below.

SYT Studios and Venue Programme

Room Hires – POSTPONED
All room hires from Monday 23rd March are considered postponed. Bookings will be honoured once the building re-opens. Should you wish to cancel a room hire then please contact Normal cancellations terms and conditions apply.

Weekly Workshops - April – June – CANCELLED
We have been advised that social gatherings are likely to be restricted in April and May and possibly beyond this. We would ask at this difficult time for all charities that customers who have already booked consider donating their payment to Scottish Youth Theatre or agree to their booking being carried forward to a future term. This will help us pay our freelance artists, technicians and contractors who will be adversely affected by this closure. Please contact if you have any enquiries.

The status of all other events has not changed from 16/03/20 (below).

National Artistic Programme

Making Space – POSTPONED
In light of new guidance we have decided to postpone the Making Space 2020 programme until later in the year.

National Ensemble – The March meeting is postponed until a future date (TBC). The April meeting (intensive week) currently postponed to June.

The status of all other events has not changed from 16/03/20 (below).

Thank you for your understanding.

We want to give our young people, customers and stakeholders information about policies and plans for the coming weeks and months in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak. We wish to emphasise that we will always place the safety of our young people and customers at the forefront of any decisions and we are following government advice on cancellations and closures. We are continually reviewing the situation.

For the moment, Scottish Youth Theatre remains open for business and will do so unless advised against this or until such a time as staff shortages force our closure. However, some events and projects have been postponed or cancelled due to their particular circumstances. We will, wherever possible, continue to deliver our programme of events as planned but this may change as new advice becomes available. Below is a list of Scottish Youth Theatre activities and how these have been affected.

SYT Studios & Venue Programme

Due to the ongoing nature of the COVID-19 outbreak we have decided in the interest of safeguarding participants, families, audiences and staff that Stramash, due to take place Saturday 21st March, is cancelled. We understand that this will be particularly disappointing for participants who have worked so hard over the term but believe this is best approach to safeguard our participants, their families and staff.

YTAS National Convention of Youth Drama 2020 – POSTPONED
The YTAS Convention has been postponed indefinitely. This decision was made mutually with YTAS in the best interests of participants and audiences. YTAS hope to rearrange the conference for a later date. You can read more about this on the YTAS website.

Room Hires – Under Review
We will remain open for all hires unless otherwise advised. Should you wish to cancel a room hire then please contact Normal cancellations terms and conditions apply. We will happily accommodate extra requests for room set up to help mitigate any risks with COVID-19, e.g. extra spacing, catering requirements etc. Please let us know how we can help.

Weekly Workshops – April – June - Under Review
These are currently under review and may be subject to cancellation at short notice. We will be reviewing this daily and will communicate any changes as soon as possible. Customers will only be charged for workshops that are delivered, otherwise normal terms and conditions apply.

Summer Courses – Under Review
Currently we have no plans to alter or cancel the Summer Courses. Should new government advice be issued this may change.

National Artistic Programme

Elevate in Annan – POSTPONED
Due to the nature of Elevate in Annan taking place in a public space, we have decided to postpone this programme. We intend to arrange a new date for later in the year.

Generator – POSTPONED
As Generator takes place in schools, colleges and universities and involves a large amount of travel, we have decided to postpone all current scheduled workshops until further notice.

Making Space – Under Review
We are in conversation with external stakeholders and will make a decision regarding postponement of the 2020 programme in the coming days.

National Ensemble – Under Review
The meetings of the National Ensemble scheduled to take place in March and April are currently under review but as things stand are still due to take place. We will be able to advise participants and stakeholders of any changes in the coming days.

We are constantly reviewing the situation in order to safeguard our participants, audiences, and staff. We face an unprecedented situation that is constantly evolving and we will be communicating any changes to arrangements via email, on social media and on our website as they occur.

Thank you for your understanding.
