News: Scottish Youth Theatre’s statement in response to Creative Scotland’s announcement

Creative Scotland has announced which arts organisations will receive Regular Funded Organisation status for 2018 – 2021 and they have informed Scottish Youth Theatre that we will not receive this funding.

Despite today’s news, Scottish Youth Theatre remains committed to continuing our work with the children and young people of Scotland. We believe we submitted a strong and realistic business plan to Creative Scotland which reflects the significant changes that came out of a period of comprehensive review. We would like to thank the Scottish Government and Clyde Blowers whose financial aid has kept us operational over the past three years and given us the space to reflect and implement these changes.

In the past year we have instigated a number of new initiatives and taken steps to improve the diversity of our participants. We have launched two new companies for young theatre-makers, found ways to support young artists to make their own work and given hundreds of children and young people their first taste of theatre. We know that our new programmes have already had a significant impact on participants and offered experiences they have not found elsewhere. We believe this is why we have been shortlisted in the School of the Year category for The Stage Awards 2018. It is a great honour to have our achievements recognised by the UK theatre sector and we are proud to be representing Scotland at the event.

We live in a time of overwhelming evidence that the arts improve mental health and overall wellbeing; increase self-esteem and social engagement and develop meaningful skills for learning, life and work. Participation in youth theatre delivers all these benefits in abundance. SYT exists to ensure that children and young people have access to such life-changing experiences that will shape the people they will become.

There is no doubt that this decision presents us with some serious challenges. We  need to act quickly and prudently to steady the ship once more and find a way to continue to offer these opportunities - especially in Scotland’s Year of Young People.
