Making Space

Offering emerging theatre makers the space and support to create new performance work.

As a Making Space resident, emerging artists are provided with the time and space to develop an original performance idea, and are matched with an experienced professional artist as mentor. The residency culminates in a work-in-progress presentation at a high-profile Scottish arts festival. You can read about previous residents and their work during the 2019 Making Space programme via our archive. Alternatively, read more about how the Making Space residencies evolved and adapted during lockdown in 2021, with the Making Space Online Festival

Who Can Apply to Making Space?

The residency is open to solo artists or small collectives, aged 18-25, who are interested in making radical new performance work. Any artist from any discipline can apply to make theatre work across art forms.

Scottish Youth Theatre is committed to creating opportunities for those who face barriers to the industry, and as such a number of the Making Space residencies will be targeted for young artists from certain backgrounds. For the other residencies, we welcome artists from all social identities and backgrounds, and are determined to remove barriers wherever possible.
