A training ground for aspiring artists interested in advancing their theatre-making skills.
Date of Activity: April – October 2019
Location: Dumfries, Stornoway
Age Range: 14-18
Elevate aimed to bring theatre-making opportunities to locations in Scotland where artistic opportunities and access to creative development were limited. It was specifically targeted at young artists, aged 14-18, who have ambitions to pursue a career in the arts but have little opportunity in their local area to develop their skills. The programmes were led by high-profile artists who collaborated with the young participants to create contemporary site-responsive performances.
In Stornoway, the young artists collaborated with theatre maker Fraser MacLeod and sound designer Ross Brown to create a site-specific performance which celebrated home. Using mobile phones and a loop pedal, they devised their own soundscape, performing original work that responded to the local island environment. In Dumfries, the artists collaborated with hidden route to create promenade and live music performances, using shop fronts, local historical sites and cafes to tell their stories.
