Immersive – noting or relating to digital technology or images that actively engage one’s senses and may create an altered mental state.
Are you curious about what immersive technologies can bring to your creative practice? Are you interested in how it contributes to storytelling, playfulness and an audience’s experience?
ImmersiveLABs was a 2-day intensive workshop designed to interrogate and experiment with accessible technologies, introducing the sensory possibilities within hybrid theatre and how it can spark different sensations for an audience.
Led by Scottish Youth Theatre in partnership with Surge Theatre, alongside a team of designers and technical experts, young artists explored a cluster of innovative technologies across two days. From robotic puppets and VR environments to projection mapping and real-time generative AI – their creative ideas were shaped into (mixed) realities. After a fast-paced first day learning and playing with the creative potential of the technology, on Day 2 the group devised a medley of short prototype pieces that blended real and virtual worlds, culminating in a light touch sharing.
ImmersiveLABs is the latest in a series of explorations for Scottish Youth Theatre in this field and we are keen to connect with other practitioners. If this project is of particular interest to you, please feel free to reach out to Digital Media Producer Jamie on jamie@scottishyouththeatre.org.
“It made me think about the possibilities of listening to music or watching performance and ‘feeling’ the emotion of it. Really special.”
