A group of young people dressed in dark clothing huddle together, grasping on another's arms and shoulders. They have a mixture of happy and content expressions on their faces
A group of young artists sit cross-legged on the floor in a circle, looking intently at scripts on the floor in front of them.

WHAT CAN A CLASSIC TALE TELL US ABOUT THE WORLD TODAY?

Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of). Little Wimmin. Nae Expectations…

Taking classic stories as a springboard to create your own narratives, get ready to rip off and rewrite over a 2-day intensive devising project. Led by artist and director Sally Charlton, Rip It Off offers young theatre-makers based in Aberdeen an environment to explore contemporary themes through innovative adaptation and devising techniques. Using text, live performance and tech, join Scottish Youth Theatre to be part of a cohort of 20 young artists to create, collaborate and perform an original short performance inspired by a classic tale in just 2 days!

Whether you’re an actor, performer, playwright or storyteller (circle as many as apply), Rip It Off is about getting over the fear of the blank page and bringing your own, original perspectives to tales already told (again and again and again)…

Sally Charlton is a Glasgow-based artist, facilitator and director working across live performance, choreography and participatory practice. Her work focuses on how the bringing together of people’s experiences provides a gateway to understanding the modern world, using live performance to create communities that unite in their shared experiences and aliveness.

RIP IT OFF IS NOW FULLY BOOKED. IF YOU HAVE REGISTERED, PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR AN EMAIL FROM A MEMBER OF THE SCOTTISH YOUTH THEATRE TEAM CONFIRMING YOUR PLACE AND DETAILS ABOUT THE PROJECT.

A young person dressed in a black shirt and trousers with long brown hair crouches on the floor, holding a sheet of paper in one hand and rehearses lines. A group of figures stands in a circle in the background.

“[Shapeshift aberdeen] completely opened up my perspective of what theatre is and what it can be.”
