Trajectories is a fully supported early-career artist development programme that was delivered through a combination of in-person and online workshops, masterclasses and rehearsals. Over a period of 7 weeks, 6 theatre-makers from a variety of creative backgrounds worked with Lead Artist Cora Bissett and a range of practitioners to experiment, collaborate with one another and develop a brand new performance, that culminated in a public showcase event at Assembly Roxy on 25 April 2025.

The young artists dissected identity and society’s role in shaping it through emotive love letters to childhood homes, journeys through family stories and the sea, the rediscovery of lost memories… or dealing with more recent ones. Audiences on the day experiencing works around the venue, where they were invited to question, consider and absorb what the artists had to say – a compelling depiction of identity in Scotland’s performance landscape.

After the showcase event, the 6 early-career artists continue to work with Scottish Youth Theatre for an extended period to extend their professional development and contribute to future programming and planning with the organisation.

“BEING A RECENT GRADUATE FROM A WORKING-CLASS BACKGROUND, I WAS INSPIRED BY THIS PROGRAMME. I AM SO LUCKY TO HAVE HAD THE TIME AND SPACE DURING TRAJECTORIES [TO FOCUS ON MY ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT] BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW IF I COULD HAVE CREATED SOMETHING AT THE LEVEL I DID WITHOUT IT.”

“THE Trajectories SHOWCASE REINFORCED HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO SUPPORT AND GIVE PAID OPPORTUNITIES TO EMERGING ARTISTS. ‘WE ALL START SOMEWHERE’ INDEED!”
